Memory Care facilities offer specialized, full-time residential care for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Although the term "Memory Care" emphasizes memory impairments, dementia affects all brain functions. Residents in Memory Care settings require continuous supervision and support due to the extensive brain changes caused by dementia. Hale Kū‘ike's three homes are dedicated exclusively to Memory Care, providing a safe and supportive environment for all our residents living with dementia.
In ʻŌlelo Hawai‘i, “Hale” means “house” and “Kū‘ike” means “to understand.” At Hale Kū‘ike, we recognize the unique needs of those living with dementia and work to enhance their quality of life. Here's what distinguishes us from other Memory Care facilities:
- Meaningful Engagement: We are committed to providing continuous, meaningful engagement for our residents every day. An activities professional, separate from our nursing staff, leads both leisure and productive activities from after breakfast until dinner time, seven days a week.
- Positive Approach to Care® Training: All our staff undergo in-depth Positive Approach to Care® dementia training both upon hiring and throughout the year. This training helps them understand the brain changes caused by dementia and adjust their approach to form positive connections with our residents. Hale Kū‘ike has the distinction of being the nation's first PAC Designated Organization.
- Outdoor Accessibility: We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, regardless of their dementia diagnosis. Our residents have free access to secure and expansive outdoor lanais and gardens, allowing them to experience the benefits of nature safely.

At Hale Kū‘ike, all resident rooms are designed as bedrooms, not apartments, since our residents spend their days engaged in our common areas rather than in their rooms. The bedrooms serve as personal spaces for care and rest.

Hale Kūʻike ensures comprehensive and continuous care with a dedicated team:
- Registered Nurse (RN): An RN is on duty during business hours, seven days a week, with the Director of Nursing available on call 24/7.
- Medication Aide: Available 24/7 to administer medications.
- Nursing Assistants: Present 24/7, maintaining a resident-to-nursing assistant ratio of approximately 7:1.
- Activities Leader: Available seven days a week to provide engaging activities for residents.
- Housekeeping: A housekeeper cleans our entire home daily.
- Culinary Team: A chef prepares fresh meals daily.

This robust staffing ensures that our residents receive the highest quality of care and attention at all times.
All three of our homes are licensed by the Department of Health (DOH) as Adult Residential Care Homes (ARCHs), with a limited number of Expanded Care beds. As residents age and require higher levels of hands-on care, they may transition to the Expanded Care level. Expanded Care is a licensing care level just below a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). When a resident moves to Expanded Care, they can remain in the same room.
The DOH requires Expanded Care residents to hire an independent geriatric case manager to oversee the enhanced care provided by Hale Kūʻike. There is an additional monthly fee for Expanded Care services.
Most of our residents live out their full lives with us under hospice care at Hale Kūʻike. There is no extra charge for hospice care, which is provided by a hospice organization in addition to the care we offer. Hospice services are covered by the resident’s health insurance.
If a resident develops a care need that requires the highest Skilled Nursing Facility level of care, we help the family with the transition to an SNF.
We aim to provide as many services as possible in-house to ensure a calm and stress-free experience for our residents. Here are some of the key services we offer:
- Geriatric Care: We partner with the Geriatric Services at The Queen’s Medical Center. One of their care providers visits each of our locations once a month to see residents under their care.
- Therapy Services: We have partnerships with occupational, physical, and speech therapists who can be scheduled for in-house sessions.
- Mobile Lab and X-Ray: These services can be arranged in-house when needed.
- Dental Care: A mobile dentist comes to our homes to provide basic cleanings and checks.
- Podiatry: A podiatrist visits regularly to attend to our residents’ foot and toenail care.
- Hairdressing: We have a professional hairdresser who provides cut, color, and styling services for our residents in our beauty salons.
These in-house services help maintain a familiar and comfortable environment for our residents while addressing their medical and personal needs.
Activities and meaningful engagement are the heart of our residents’ daily lives. Our activities professional, separate from our nursing staff, leads both leisure and productive activities seven days a week from after breakfast through dinner time.
We believe that everyone needs fun and a sense of purpose to thrive. To meet this need, we offer a diverse mix of engagements, including leisure, productive, wellness, self-care, and rest and restoration activities. Our daily schedule includes:
- Old-Fashioned Fun: Games like bingo
- Exercise: tai chi, outdoor walks
- Music: Singing, listening to music
- Household Chores: Participating in light household tasks
- Arts and Crafts: Creative projects
- Relaxation: Putting our feet up in a recliner
Recognizing that each resident is unique, we strive to learn as much as we can about their personal history and preferences to tailor activities accordingly. Some residents enjoy large group activities, while others prefer smaller, more individualized engagements. We modify activities to meet their preferences and their level of dementia.
