The Standard of Care
24-Hour Resident Care
With our highly trained staff, this is round-the-clock care you can count on. Nursing Assistants provide overnight care and monitoring, while our Registered Nurses are onsite during the day and available on-call after hours.
To deliver the finest in memory care, we adhere to the Positive Approach to Care® (PAC) training curriculum. Our Certified PAC Trainers, PAC Coaches and Engagement Leaders, all work together to provide on-going, hands-on dementia education and skill-building for staff members in all departments.
Each staff member is trained to understand the experience of memory loss and to focus on residents’ strengths. By building strong, lasting relationships with each resident, we can create personalized solutions that serve our residents best.
Fine Cuisine
We believe that food feeds the soul. A well-prepared meal provides joy in times of celebration, comfort in times of anxiety, and promotes good cheer around the table. This is important for people with dementia, who truly live in the moment.
Our chefs create each meal from scratch with fresh ingredients, balancing flavor with the special dietary and nutritional needs of our residents. Menu items reflect the meals residents may have enjoyed while growing up.
Many of our chefs are proud graduates of The Culinary Institute of the Pacific, Hawai‘i’s premier culinary program.
Activities and Programs
Our philosophy is to find joy in all that we do and bring the zest of life into each day. We strive to have a balance of productive, leisure, wellness, and rest and restoration activities. Even familiar “living activities” such as folding laundry and cooking provide opportunities for success by targeting remaining abilities.
We also employ alternative approaches including music therapy, aromatherapy, pet therapy and tai chi. We are the only memory care home in Hawai‘i that offers tai chi for arthritis and seated tai chi by a certified tai chi instructor.
Healing Gardens
There’s no better place to be on a bright day, than outdoors admiring the beauty of Hawai‘i. Hale Kū‘ike’s landscape is designed to bring the wonder of our tropical island to our residents.
Within our secure gated area, residents are free to roam the lush gardens, soak in the Hawaiian sunshine and smell the flowers. Numerous design elements throughout the gardens help stimulate conversations and orient residents. Seating is provided throughout for quiet reflection, reading or socializing.
Circular garden paths provide continuity, an important element for those living with dementia. And since safety is always our top priority, paths have also been tested to make sure their slopes are gentle enough for residents with mobility issues.
Innovative Design
What is the ideal chair height for an older person with mobility issues? What is the appropriate brightness of light for someone who is cognitively impaired? Why are there antiques throughout the home?
Every design element at Hale Kū‘ike has a purpose. Best practices in design philosophies from Scandinavia and around the world have been researched, tested and incorporated to create an environment that is healthy, calming and supportive.
Antiques and old photographs evoke a feeling of familiarity. Lighting has been optimized for older eyes. Tables and chairs are ergonomically correct for our kūpuna. Original oil paintings from local artist Kelley Fitzgerald provide a welcoming atmosphere. And the entire floor plan has been laid out to encourage social interaction, independence and movement.
